THE SYMPOSIUM FOR STRENGTH AND SOLIDARITY Reader

The Strength & Solidarity Reader is a collection of lessons and tools from a five-year global experiment in human rights organizing. I led the design and art direction, helping turn years of dialogue into a book that others could print, share, and use to keep the work alive.

In 2018, I worked with the Canadian Labour Congress on a campaign built from one truth: women were #Donewaiting for economic justice.

A BOOK THAT INVITES PARTICIPATION

A LINE IN THE SAND

A BOOK THAT INVITES PARTICIPATION

A BOOK THAT INVITES PARTICIPATION

The Reader was created for activists, educators, and organizers who are building human rights movements in their own contexts. It captures the thinking and tools that emerged from the Symposium on Strength and Solidarity for Human Rights, a project dedicated to reimagining how movements build power and sustain care.

Each section introduces key ideas on solidarity, organizational strength, and cultures of respect, then offers readings, stories, and exercises that help groups turn reflection into action.

The Reader was built as a guide you can work with, write in, and make your own.

CARRYING THE WORK FORWARD

The Reader helps movements build on what already exists instead of starting from zero. It gives organizers, educators, and communities a shared foundation for learning and solidarity.

It can be used to:

  • Facilitate workshops and trainings, where groups explore readings together and discuss how they apply locally.

  • Start new movements and community gatherings, using its chapters as a roadmap for collective learning.

  • Bridge generations of activists, by preserving lessons that might otherwise disappear with time.

By design, the Reader continues to evolve. It is a living tool, meant to circulate and grow as movements change. Its impact comes from how easily it can be picked up, adapted, and reimagined by the next group that needs it.

Thank you to the Symposium on Strength and Solidarity for Human Rights team, Akwe Amose, Daniella Lock, and Sarah Mostafa-Kamel who made this project possible.

This reader reminded me that design create a sense of belonging, allowing people across the world to see their struggles, questions, and hopes reflected on the same page.
